Triglav Summit Day from Bohinj via Rudno Polje

A brutal but unforgettable 33 km, 2000 m day hike to Slovenia's highest peak, starting before dawn from Rudno Polje on the Pokljuka plateau. Expect 12–14 hours on the trail — ferrata gear and a helmet are essential for the exposed final push to the iconic Aljaž Tower at 2864 m.

Night departure from Bohinj valley, sunrise on the ridge, golden hour with sheep flocks at altitude, then a ferrata push to the Aljaž Tower on Triglav. Budget 12–14 hours and pack ferrata gear — the exposed summit ridge demands it.

Park here for free, but make sure to leave your car before the sign where paid parking begins. This is your 4 a.m. launchpad into the dark.

Start Of Hike
Srednja Vas v Bohinju
The first trail marker of the day, with roughly six hours of climbing still ahead. A good moment to check headlamps and layers before the forest swallows you.
hike
Sheeps
Bohinjsko Jezero
The path winds through open alpine pasture where sheep graze at altitude — a surreal, peaceful contrast to the rocky terrain above.
hike
Vodnik's Hut on Velem polju
Bohinjsko Jezero
First real rest stop: eat something, refill water bottles, and use the toilet. Crucially, when you leave, take the path that climbs upward toward Dom na Planiki — not the flatter left fork, which leads to Dolič Hut and adds three hours to your day.
hike
Dolic Hut
Soča
We ended up here after missing the fork at Vodnikov Hut. If you find yourself at Dolič, don't despair — it's still a beautiful hut — but know that Planika is another two hours from here.

Viewpoint
Bohinjsko Jezero
A striking viewpoint among the high rocks, with trail markers and alpine infrastructure that signal you're entering serious summit terrain.
hike
Planika Hut below Triglavom
Bohinjsko Jezero
After a long approach, Planika Hut is a welcome sight. Gear up with helmet and ferrata kit here, and stash heavy bags — the final push to the summit requires both hands free.

Top Of Triglav
Bohinjsko Jezero
The roof of Slovenia. The Aljaž Tower marks the 2864 m summit, and on a good day a man sells cold beer up here — well earned after everything it took to get here.
hike
Vodnik's Hut on Velem polju
Bohinjsko Jezero
On the descent, we returned to Vodnikov Hut via the correct path and finally understood where we'd gone wrong. Leaving the hut toward Planika, take the trail that climbs upward — the left-hand path that runs roughly level is the detour to Dolič. Easy to miss, hard to forget.

Finish — Triglav
Back at the trailhead after 12–14 hours and roughly 33 km on your legs — the finish line of one of Slovenia's most demanding single-day ascents.
